Welcome to the Department of Language Studies (DLS) at Sokoine University of Agriculture! We are dedicated to providing high-quality training and education in language and communication skills. Whether you are an undergraduate student, a member of the SUA community, or a member of the general public, we have something to offer you.

For all undergraduate students pursuing various programs at Sokoine University of Agriculture, we offer Communication Skills courses. These courses are mandatory and designed to enhance students’ English proficiency. We understand the importance of effective communication in academic settings, and our courses are tailored to help students excel in their diverse areas of specialisation.

Academic Course

Bachelor of Arts in Education (English and Literature)

This undergraduate program prepares specialised English language and literature educators equipped to teach in primary and secondary schools in Tanzania and beyond. It is ideal for individuals passionate about language, literature, and teaching.

Career Pathways and Opportunities: English Language and Literature Teacher (Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Levels), Curriculum Developer or Educational Content Creator, Creative Writer (e.g., novels, plays, and poetry), Digital Educator (e.g., podcast creator or online course designer) and School Administrator or Education Consultant

Learning Outcomes: Graduates of this program will possess the knowledge, skills, and competencies to develop and evaluate English language and literature curricula, Demonstrate creativity by producing original works such as novels, poems, and plays, and by designing digital learning platforms like podcasts, Effectively plan, teach, and assess English language and literature learners using learner-centred methodologies and innovative teaching techniques and Manage educational institutions with strong leadership, organisational, and interpersonal skills.

Master of Translation and Interpretation

This advanced program trains experts in the specialised fields of translation and interpretation, meeting the growing demand for linguistic professionals in today’s globalised world.

Career Pathways and Opportunities: Professional Translator (e.g., in international organisations or publishing houses), Interpreter (e.g., for government agencies, conferences, or private corporations), Localization Specialist for Multinational Companies, Language Consultant or Linguistic Researcher, Trainer in Translation and Interpretation Studies

Learning Outcomes: Graduates of this program will develop advanced expertise in translation and interpretation across various contexts and languages., Apply linguistic and cultural knowledge to bridge communication gaps in diverse professional settings, Use specialised tools and technologies to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of translation and interpretation and Exhibit professionalism and ethical practice in multilingual environments.

SUA Centre for African and International Languages

In addition to our academic programs, the Department of Language Studies hosts the SUA Centre for African and International Languages. The Centre offers a variety of short courses and tailor-made programs in English, Spanish, French, and Kiswahili. These programs are designed to help individuals enhance their language skills for personal, academic, or professional purposes. With experienced instructors, participants receive personalised guidance to achieve their desired level of proficiency.

Research and Preservation of African Languages and Cultures:

Beyond language training, the Centre conducts research on African languages, with a primary focus on documenting and preserving endangered languages and cultures across the continent. This effort is vital for safeguarding Africa’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage for future generations.

Key Activities of the Centre:

  • Research on African languages and their sociolinguistic contexts.
  • Documentation of endangered African languages and cultural practices.
  • Development of dictionaries, glossaries, and learning materials for under-represented languages.
  • Develop and offer short courses and tailor-made programs in English, Spanish, French, and Kiswahili.
  • Promotion of cultural exchange through language studies.
